Describe the actual work.

“Bathroom remodel” can mean replacing finishes or relocating plumbing and changing walls. Prepare a specific scope, existing photos and proposed changes. Ask the local building department which approvals apply to that scope and address.

Separate the responsibilities.

A building permit does not answer every trade question. Confirm whether separate electrical or plumbing permits are needed and who will apply for each. Record responsibility for drawings, submissions, fees and inspections in the project agreement.

Build approvals into the sequence.

Do not assume a neighboring town follows the same process or timeline. Walpole provides an online permit portal; other towns have their own procedures. Confirm required approvals before starting affected work and plan inspection points before concealing work. Permit timing is project-specific.
